Chapter 1: The Baptism of Jesus
Based on Matthew 3:13-17

Scripture Background

John the Baptist was the son of Elizabeth and Zechariah. He was the last great prophet before Jesus. He prepared people for the coming of Jesus, the Messiah. He invited people to be baptized and the repent their sins.

The Jordan River, the primary river in Palestine, lies east of Jerusalem. It flows from north to south through the center of Palestine. It is about 200 miles long. It begins in Syria, and flows through the Sea of Galilee to the north end of the Dead Sea.

Jesus' baptism marks the beginning of his public life. After his baptism, Jesus goes alone into the desert where he is tempted. When he returns, he calls his followers and embarks on his mission.

One day, Jesus came to the Jordan River. Seeing John the Baptist in the water, Jesus said to him, "Baptize me as you are baptizing the other people."

John said to Jesus, "You do not need to be baptized."

Jesus answered, "For now, do as I ask you."

Jesus walked down into the water, and John baptized him. When Jesus came up out of the water, he saw the Spirit of God like a dove come down upon him. Jesus also heard a voice saying, "You are my Son. I love you."
