Chapter 2: The First Christians
Based on Acts 2:41-47

Scripture Background

The author of Luke also wrote the Acts of the Apostles. This book of the New Testament tells how the followers of Jesus lived what Jesus had taught them. These first Christians lived together in community. They shared all things in common--meals and possessions. No one was ever in need. They met in homes and prayed together.

Many of these followers lived in mud-brick houses. These homes, which sheltered both the people and their animals, had only one or two rooms. An entire family's possessions probably fit into one chest.

Many people were baptized and became followers of Jesus. They shared their food and everything they had. They helped one another live as Jesus taught them.

They spent time together learning about Jesus and praying together. They broke and shared bread with one another as the disciples did with Jesus.
