Pray, Fast, and Give Alms

In February, we began Lent. Lent is a time to renew our commitment to God in preparation for the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts 40 weekdays plus six Sundays. Lent commemorates the life and death of Jesus. Then culminates on Easter Sunday, when we celebrate Jesus’ victory over death and the gift of everlasting life.

During Lent, Catholics spend time in prayer to strengthen their faith. They fast from or give up activities that distract them from their spiritual journey. They also give alms, or give of themselves to others in service and kindness. Choose one of the following activities to celebrate Lent together.

“I will give you a new heart and a new spirit. I will remove your heart f stone and put within you a heart of flesh.” Based on Ezekiel 36:26

• Pray – Pray together for God to strengthen your faith. Pray for peace. Pray for the homebound in your community. Pray for children who have terminal illnesses.

• Fast – Invite the youngsters to give up making negative comments about classmates.

• Give alms – Help the youngsters to be encouraging of one another.
