Hunger
Now
the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and
no one claimed private ownership of any possessions. Everything they owned
was held in common. There was not a needy person among them. Those who
owned lands or houses sold them. They brought the proceeds to the apostles,
and it was distributed to each as any had need.
--Based on Acts 4:32-35
We live in a society of instant gratification. We can put coins into a
machine and immediately a snack or can of soda appears. We can pull-up
to a drive-through window of a fast food restaurant and have an entire
meal in minutes. Help children understand that for some people, hunger
is a real and life threatening experience. Help them develop patterns
which raise their consciousness and encourage them to make regular donations
to food shelves or shelters.
• Organize a food drive. If possible, call your local food shelf
and find out if there are any specific needs and do a food specific drive.
• Organize a soup supper and donate the proceeds to the food shelf.
You could do this with just your group of youngsters, or you could invite
their families and friends.
