Year C
Baptism of the Lord - Year B
January 11, 2009

Read Sunday's gospel, Mark 1:7-11.

Gospel Summary
Most of Mark's accounts of events in Jesus' life are short and to the point. The account of Jesus' baptism in today's gospel illustrates this. In a few brief sentences, Mark makes clear that Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan. There is no doubt that John was the lesser of the two figures. So simple is Mark's account that it is never clear if anyone heard the voice from heaven, or if only Jesus understood who he was. What was clear from the words, was that Jesus had a special relationship with God.

Reflection for Families
At our children's baptism we promised to train them in the practice of our faith, to bring them up to keep God's commandments, and to love God and our neighbors. How are we doing?

Bringing the Gospel into Your Family
If you have them, set out the pictures, candles, and white garments and share stories of your children's baptism. If they were old enough to remember the day themselves, they will enjoy recalling the events as well. Remind one another of the promises made them: to be taught the practice of our faith, keeping God's commandments, and loving God and our neighbors. Share ideas about how each of the promises is being kept. What are parents and godparents doing? What are the children doing?

Discussion Starters
1. I know God is pleased with me because . . .
2. One of the baptismal promises that I need to work harder at is . . .
3. For me, the most important thing about being baptized is . . .
