Dignity of Workers
Jesus
said, “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy
burdens, and I will give you rest.” Based on Matthew 11:28
“Work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continuing
participation in God’s creation. If the dignity of work is to be
protected, then basic rights of workers must be respected…. Respecting
these rights promotes an economy that protects human life, defends human
rights, and advances the well-being of all.” (Sharing Catholic
Social Teaching: Challenges and Directions, #5)
As Catholic consumers, we are called to inform ourselves about the working
conditions of people who make the products we purchase. We also must treat
all people in service careers with respect. Take time this month to show
your appreciation to those who serve you through their careers.
• Serve the custodial staff pizza for lunch. If you teach in a Catholic
school, take responsibility for setting-up and cleaning-up the cafeteria
while the custodians enjoy their pizza.
• Write thank-you notes to your pastor. Give the children a few
scripture quotes that they could include in the cards. Or invite them
to think of their own scripture quotes.
