Last time, after having had a run-in with Mr. Barrymore, Vera ran to the alley by Mrs. Conn’s shop and decided to call Officer Littlepoole for help. Vera confessed to the officer that she had snuck out of her house and gone alone to the old courthouse. Officer Littlepoole didn’t scold Vera, but did tell the teen that she would have to call Vera’s parents. The officer told Vera to stay where she was, and reassured Vera that she would be right there. Waiting for Officer Littlepoole, Vera looked around nervously. She suddenly heard footsteps and she began to feel afraid again. Who was coming down the dark alley? Was it Jenny Littlepoole or was it the frightening Woman in Gray? Here’s what you decided.

Chapter 29
Apparition Suspicion

After awhile, Vera heard footsteps coming down the alley.

Vera’s heart began to beat very fast. She peered into the darkness to see who was coming. She could make out the shape of a person. It looked like a woman, but it didn’t look like Officer Littlepoole.

Vera wondered if she should call out. “I’m here!” But, if it wasn’t Jenny Littlepoole, Vera didn’t want to draw attention to herself.

Vera squinted into the darkness. “Who is that?” She nervously thought to herself.
Vera’s heart continued to pound.

“Who’s there?’ Vera called out. “Officer Littlepoole?”

No one answered, but Vera could hear the footsteps quicken.

“Who is it?” Vera shouted again.

“You know who I am.” A woman’s voice hissed back.

Vera began to really panic. She pressed her back against the brick wall and wished that she could push herself through it.

“Stay where you are.” The woman moaned.

It was then, that Vera saw who was coming. In her shimmering gray ball gown, with wild ash-colored hair and hollow eyes, the Woman in Gray came quickly toward Vera.

“Oh no!” Vera gulped.

“Don’t move.” The Woman in Gray growled.

“Leave me alone.” Vera said, her voice shaking with fear. “Go away.”

“Never.” The Woman in Gray croaked. “I’ll never go away. I will haunt this town until I get revenge on those who have wronged me.”

By then, the scary woman was very close to Vera.

Vera’s whole body shook. “I haven’t wronged you. I’m just a teenager. I haven’t done anything to you.”

“Haven’t you?” The Woman in Gray laughed wickedly. “Didn’t your grandfather sell the tools that they used to tear down my home? Didn’t your father sell the supplies that were used to build a hotel on my land? Aren’t you a Molton, the daughter of the Molton Hardware Store people?”

“How do you know who I am?” Vera gulped.

“I know everything!” The Woman in Gray cackled. “I have watched everyone in this town for a century! I watched from the window of my mansion when my love was lost and then, when my home was taken from me, I watched from the streets of this town!”

“No, you didn’t.” Vera swallowed hard, trying to sound brave. “You’re not a ghost. You’re an imposter. Leave me alone!”

“An imposter?” The Woman in Gray bellowed. “You are foolish to challenge me.”

“There aren’t ghosts haunting this town.” Vera shouted. “You’re just some strange person in a costume and I want you to leave me alone.”

“Be careful, girl.” The woman growled again.

“No!” A voice said from behind the ghost. It was Officer Littlepoole! “You’re the one who had better be careful!”

“Officer Littlepoole,” Vera screamed, “help me! Please!”

“Leave the girl alone!” Officer Littlepoole shouted.

The Woman in Gray quickly backed up, almost tripping on the long train of her gown.

“That’s right.” Officer Littlepoole nodded, taking her badge out of her pocket and showing it to the “ghost.” “I’m a police officer,” she continued. “And, you’re breaking the law.”

“You’re the ones who have broken the law.” The Woman in Gray said hurriedly, still backing the opposite way down the alley. “You took my home from me!”

“Don’t move.” Jenny Littlepoole glared at the Woman in Gray. “You’re under arrest.”

“Try to catch me!” The Woman in Gray screamed.

“I won’t let her get away.” Vera shouted, feeling braver with Jenny Littlepoole there.

Vera ran toward the so-called ghost, and tried to grab the woman’s arm, but the Woman in Gray knocked Vera to the ground. Vera landed with a thud, knocking the breath out of her.

With that, the Woman in Gray ran off down the alley.

“Vera!” Officer Littlepoole shouted. “Are you okay?”
